National Rebuilding Day
(Major Home Rehabilitation)

On April 25th, 2009, Rebuilding Together will be completing major home rehabilitation projects on homes throughout Summit County joining more than 200 other affiliates in communities across the country.  These efforts require large crews of skilled and unskilled workers donating a Saturday to transform the home (and the life) of an individual in need.

How to Participate

Sponsor a House: You can help us change a life by raising the money needed to purchase materials and recruiting the volunteers to rehab a house for a disabled or   elderly individual in need.

Volunteer for Event Day: We are need of hundreds of volunteers for event day. We need skilled and unskilled volunteers to perform a variety of tasks which may include the following:

  • Repairing a furnace

  • Electrical rewiring

  • Installing a new kitchen floor

  • Installing grab bars and other safety equipment

  • Trimming trees, landscaping

  • Interior and exterior painting

  • Roof replacement

  • Installing handrails

  • Installing or repairing steps

  • General cleanup

  • Installing light fixtures

Donate Resources:

Rebuilding Together Summit County, Inc. secures donations from area businesses and organization for supplies, to complete the repairs on these homes. We attempt to match every dollar donated with three dollars in materials, supplies or labor. Each dollar contributed can be used to leverage our ability to help more people that genuinely need our programs’ services.

Minor Home Repair

Many of the homeowners we serve do not have the financial resources to maintain even the most common needs in their home. Through our minor home repair program, we seek to repair some of the more critical things such as replacing a roof, fixing or replacing a furnace, building a ramp, upgrading the electrical system, painting, and flooring. Often these repairs are provided to a homeowner in a more limited way than the Major Home Rehabilitation provides and as funds allow.

Safety Modifications

The home can be a dangerous place. In fact, elderly and disabled individuals are constantly at risk for falls, exposure to carbon monoxide and other environmental agents in the home.

Through Rebuilding Together’s Safety at Home program, items are provided such as smoke and CO detectors, grab bars, furnace, plumbing and electrical checks, door locks, step repair, house numbers installed on outside of home, motion sensor lights and other items that improve the safety of the homeowner.

Statistics indicate that most elderly homeowners who experience a fall within their home are never able to return to their home after the accident. These efforts work to help prevent the kind of accident or exposure that would cause injury, illness, or even death.

After a volunteer inspector surveys the house, he/she might complete many of the following tasks:

  • Installing handrails

  • Installing or repairing steps

  • Installing CO or smoke detectors

  • Installing grab bars and other safety equipment

  • Enhance the lighting

  • Check the furnace

  • Repair broken windows

  • Discussion of other safety measures the homeowner may be able to complete on their own

Emergency Repairs

Occasionally, the needs are so urgent that they are deemed an emergency. Emergency Repairs are completed in response to unforeseen circumstances such as weather, and other crisis relative to heating, sewer, water systems that are not covered by insurance.  Repairs are generally made within 48 hours.  The Board has set a limit of $3,500.00 per home for an emergency repair.
